A Not-So-Merry Christmas For Some
An Honest Reflection On The Troubles Xmas Can Bring & Some Offers!
Christmas is upon us and the festive mood has settled into our places of work.
We’ve just had secret Santa and I’ve been given some socks with stethoscopes on them - a very apt present!
However, Christmas can be a difficult time for some people. The added financial pressure to get gifts as well as the feeling of loneliness for those who live alone are palpable.
Health inequalities are really exacerbated during this time in both material possessions as well as emotions. It’s tough and I’ve had a handful of patients open up to their woes this Christmas.
No doubt, the cost of living crises has hit everyone but it has left the vulnerable amongst us completely exposed. I recently posted the findings of a paper that really hit home the level of inequality and inequity were faced with.
An insightful study by the The Lancet looked at all deaths between 2002-2019 from the ten leading cancers and broke this down according to geographic area. The findings were shocking. For example, in the poorest areas, the risk of dying from cancer was more than 70% higher than the wealthiest areas.
So what have I learnt through this reflection?
I’ve learnt to be honest about the state of society…
I’ve learnt to be open about my patients. A simple question like “how are you spending this Christmas?”…
I’ve learnt to try and call upon services such as the homeless team, social prescribers and elderly social services. These are some tools in our armoury to help patients.
Let’s be an advocate for the most vulnerable in our society.
What am I watching?
TV shows aren’t really my thing but reality TV is quite easy to get hooked on. There’s something about seeing others live their lives and watching the decisions they make (good/bad) play out live. One such show is Dubai Bling. My wife made me sit through season 1 and despite wanting to throw my phone at the TV a number of times, it made me realise that more money = more problems!
Join me in watching Season 2 where the same cast continue to live their lavish lives whilst hating on each other! It’s super entertaining.
