Yes, you read it right. There is funding available for CPD and many of us don’t know about it. Have a look at this email that was sent at my trust…
It’s difficult to find time for CPD and with the cost of living crisis, money is certainly tight. However, we all need to up-skill and if the current job market is anything to go by, having extended competencies makes you more valuable or employable for employers.
Each professional group has its own requirements for CPD and I wanted to introduce an easy-to-understand approach to CPD.
What topics do I need CPD in?
This varies depending on professional background. Generally, most activities can be linked to CPD as long as it’s clinically relevant to your role. For example, if you’re based in primary care, blood interpretation is never a wrong option. However, for some professional groups, certain types of CPD are vital to the role.
In primary care, it is important to attend a yearly update course and perhaps a minor illness’ refresher course.
A good example is Advanced Life Support in secondary care. Without this, you can’t hold responsibility for a ward and is therefore, required for your role. In primary care, it is important to attend a yearly update course and perhaps a minor illness’ refresher course. These are two courses we also provide.
How many hours do I need?
This is where things get slightly complicated. CPD is generally divided into “internal” and “external” CPD. Internal CPD is anything you do in your role and you can log this into your portfolio. Whether it’s reading, practice meetings, journal clubs or audit work - all of this can be logged as internal CPD.
A useful activity is to re-visit your last appraisal. Think about the targets you sent last time and whether there is a course/training that can help you achieve them.
External CPD is what it says on the tin - it requires to go “outside” your immediate practice. This can either be in the form of a formalised qualification such as a degree or via CPD accredited courses. These are courses that are delivered by qualified professionals given a stamp by an official CPD provider. There are many providers and they all have a registration number which is nationally recognised.
A word of warning however, you should check your professional body’s guidance on this. Sometimes, based on the setting or curriculum requirement at the time, you may be required to complete CPD activities in certain areas. I know I mentioned this before, but it cannot be understated!

How do I complete my CPD requirements?
There are quite a few CPD providers all over the UK and a quick google will uncover a large number of courses both live and “on-demand.” The issue is that often these courses are either too general for your specific requirements or not catered to your professional background. Certainly, many professionals we’ve spoken to find themselves slotting into CPD courses for doctors which isn’t the ideal setting.
We at Pareto Education have always believed in “up-skilling the MDT.” We have worked with qualified professionals extensively and have networked with GPs, hospitals and other institution to understand the climate of the NHS and what patients need.
We have thus decided to create a contemporary, relevant CPD calendar specifically for the development of allied health professionals. Our CPD courses have thus far been hugely successful and with feedback and some soul searching, we believe we will be providing an excellent range of courses of high value, at an incredibly low cost. Here’s what you can expect:
