It seems as though my last newsletter resonated well with you all,
We received lots of likes and messages about what has been described by someone as an “open and honest take on things.”
To summarise, I ended on a slightly controversial note. The reality is that GPs, acute care doctors, ACPs, PAs and others will quickly find themselves competing for the same jobs. This means that our focus should be on how we can make ourselves more employable as opposed to constantly complaining!
Today I wanted to share some insights into one such area and that is teaching.
Did you know that aGP surgeries in 2020 were given approximately £28000 to host one medical student placement for an entire year? The figure is approximately £15-20,000 for a nursing or PA student.
That’s just the figure for students by the way. GPs and NHS trusts are remunerated given more for training professional trainees. Obtaining the title of teaching practice or teaching hospital = £££’s for institutions.
Being a clinical teacher or having the credentials to do so makes you highly attractive as a potential employee. It gives you a better negotiating position for increases to your salary.
Think about it this way, if a practice pays you £40,000 and you are able to teach 4 clinical students who each bring in £15,000 (worst case scenario) then they have paid off your wages and made more on top. It’s a no brainer!
How Can You Prove Yourself as a Clinical Teacher?
Clinical teaching comes very natural to clinicians. We are taught all the time and are expected to teach our juniors. The hard part is formalising it and collating the evidence for this but there are some ways you can do that:
Organise some local teaching and collect feedback forms. These forms act as evidence and demonstrate that you are a reflective teacher.
Undertake a teaching qualification such as a PGCert in clinical education. There are plenty of institutions that offer them and you do learn some really helpful information about how to be an effective clinical teacher.
Attend a teaching course such as Teach the Teacher. These are short half day or one day teaching courses that give you some insight into effective teaching strategies.
Get involved in curriculum development/examination. Universities are always on the look out for clinicians who can contribute to the development of new modules, question writing or budding examiners.
Take part in organising online/in-person teaching. Employers like to see initiative and if you can prove that you’ve taken a teaching project from nothing to something then that goes a huge way. There are plenty of opportunities with us at Pareto, so just email us on info@paretoeducation.co.uk if you’d like to get involved.
Be sure to source funding for some of things above. Approach your employer and declare your desire to enhance your teaching CV. Practices and Trusts are often happy to fund you for additional courses as ultimately, they will reap the benefits.
Finally, don’t be taken advantage off! I’ve heard so many stories of clinicians going out of their way to get involved in teaching, research and other educational activities with nothing to show for it. Some supervisors or companies can be really brutal. I would be open in setting expectations and what you’re looking to get at the end of it (feedback, letter, certificate etc).
Let us know how you get on and don’t hesitate to email/comment below if you require some help or advice.
Until next time!
Student and Professional Webinars
We’ve been closely planning our next year and based on feedback we made some realisations. We decided this year to split our offerings into professional and student offerings. Here are some key differences:
Our student webinars are for students sitting single-best answer style questions. We will focus here on exam practice, exam technique and clinical guidance concerning key investigations and treatments. These are geared towards physician associate and medical students. These are NOT CPD accredited.
Our professional webinars are for training and qualified professionals. We make them practice focussed and take on real-life scenarios including diagnosis, rationalising investigations and clinical management (community and hospital). These are CPD accredited and you will be given an e-book/slide pack after your attendance. These are for trainee/qualified ACPs, PAs, doctors, pharmacists & paramedics
We keep all our paid webinars price competitive and are much cheaper than other companies. Do check out our website for more information!
