2024 has been an interesting year. It’s been a year of “returning characters”. We’ve had the return of Labour in government, Trump’s presidency across the pond and even Mike Tyson in the boxing ring.
In the same light, there have been a number of updates in the world of healthcare and research and this short newsletter helps to bring some of them together in one place.
Here we go….
HER2 -ve breast cancers were always difficult to treat. However, the UK had seen the introduction of talazoparib to treat locally invasive breast cancer.
Alopecia guidance also changed with the introduction of Ritlecitinib to deal with this troublesome disease. You can read about this here.
Patients with moderate-severe ulcerative colitis with no response to biologics were pleased to see another treatment option in the form of etrasimod. This is a sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor which helps to reduce the inflammatory effects on the blow.
Community and hospital sleep clinics were given some breathing space with NICE recommended a number of diagnostic devices which patients can use at home. This has increased the capacity to process new referrals.
Changes to weight management including tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3. This also includes the recommendation of classes of medication to help patients with obesity.
We’ve also seen the introduction of new technology to take pressures of NHS services. We’ve seen new AI powered questionnaires for ADHD, online services for anxiety and depression and more.
In addition to this, we have seen updates in guidance for the following subjects:
Cardiovascular - hypertension follow up and heart failure with preserved ejection fracture.
Respiratory - Changes in guidance in use of spirometry, FeNo and MAART therapy for asthmatics
Gynae - New guidance for PV bleeding in patients with HRT.
Endocrinology - Earlier intervention in patients with pre-diabetes.
GI - NICE guidance concerning the use of stool testing for gastroenteritis and IBD.
Antibiotics - Key changes in indications, duration and mc+s guidance
MSK - Emergency referral criteria in patients with caudal equina syndrome
Palliative Care - Updates to guidance concerning de-prescribing in patients who are EoL.
Mental Health - Significant updates to perinatal mental health and referral from primary care
and lots more…
We completely appreciate how difficult it is to keep up with all of these updates. However, it’s vital that we keep up with these changes as they have significant impacts on diagnosis, investigations and referral. It makes sure of:
Evidence-based practice
Safe, effective and timely referral for patients
Pleasant patient experience
Confidence in our own practice
It is for this reason we have worked hard to create the MDT Update course. Suitable for all patient-facing MDT members, this course gives you a comprehensive review of the most relevant areas of clinic practice. We cover primary, urgent care and secondary care topics and will provide a presentation full of guidance, clinical summaries and opportunity to share tips and insights.
So join us LIVE on Saturday 7th December 2024 from 09:00 - 16:30. If you cannot make it live, you will also receive a RECORDING to watch for 60 days. You will also receive an externally accredited CPD certificate to add to your records.
This promises to be an excellent review of core clinical topics that will surely upskill you for clinical practice going forwards!
