Revalidation, CPD, Appraisals and Some Useful Tricks
Here are some "easy" ways to get some CPD points
Revalidation..
Appraisals..
CPD..
These are just some of the words that make us think “oh damn.. it’s that time already?”
For a long time healthcare professionals were required to sit recertification exams. It was assumed that healthcare professionals need to keep their knowledge up to date in order to practice and hence, sitting exams was mandatory.
This wasn’t the case with other professionals however. Infact, it was relatively outdated thinking. In careers such as law where memorisation and knowledge of legislation is key, it was recognised that experience was far more important than knowledge in practice. I think we can all agree with this.
The GMC and NMC first introduced revalidation in 1998 and since then nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapists, advanced clinical practitioners and physician associates have followed suit. We are all required to demonstrate continuous professional development (CPD) over 3-5 years. This can be quite confusing so I thought I’d share some tips to secure some easy CPD points:
Firstly, mentality. CPD should be an opportunity to learn so use it as an exercise to address any knowledge/CV gaps you may have. If you’re proactive, you can really accelerate in your development!
Start early as CPD points need to be obtained over a period of time. Don’t leave it to the last few weeks!
CPD points are split into “internal” and “external” points. So…
Internal points are available for simpler activities such as reflections and teaching alongside more complicated things like audits, journal club and organising regional meetings.
CPD should ideally be illustrated beyond your scope of practice. For example, if you’re an ACP in general surgery, showing that you’ve attended some teaching on “medical emergencies” demonstrates your desire to be comprehensive in your practice.
External points are trickier to get but attending conferences, especially those within your royal college is a good idea. Course are also good such as ALS as well as teaching webinars and workshops.
It’s common to ignore the everyday things you do that could be counted as CPD. Mandatory training for instance can act as CPD as long as you write a reflection linking it appropriately to your profession. Even reading a research article can be claimed as CPD!
Trust me, it’s definitely not rocket science and there are sooo many opportunities. Fortunately, we at Pareto have you covered through our CPD calendar. If you’re a student or a qualified professional, attend one of our evening webinars to get a refresher on a topic that we are presenting.
We start with cardiology where we cover hypertension, heart failure and types of shock. Some of our webinars are more extensive online workshops where we also give out a FREE pdf so keep a look out for these!
